What you should know about the new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19)
New coronaviruses are invading the world, including many families in California, because the virus is spreading to more and more communities. Children ’s Hospital Los Angeles is working hard to protect our patients, family members and team members.
We consulted experts and some facts can help answer some common questions of parents. The following is information about the new virus, measures being taken to prevent the continued spread of the new coronavirus, and ways to protect yourself from infection threats.
What is a coronavirus?
Coronavirus is a general term for a group of viruses that can infect humans and animals at the same time, causing respiratory diseases. Mild cases are like common cold, and severe cases will develop into pneumonia. Animal coronavirus infects humans and spreads among the population is an extremely rare phenomenon. You may remember the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2002-2003, which is a typical case of the transfer of coronavirus from animals to humans. More recently, another typical coronavirus strain appeared in the Middle East in 2012, called MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), which scientists believe was originally transferred from camels to humans.
I saw a test result showing "Coronavirus". Should I be worried?
no need to worry. Most patients diagnosed with coronavirus are equivalent to having a common cold or flu. Remember, the word "coronavirus" covers the entire virus family. No need to panic if the coronavirus test is positive. This can be confusing, so if you see this word, please cooperate with the doctor or the nursing team.
How does coronavirus spread?
Coronavirus is usually spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing, close contact with infected persons, or contact with infected surfaces, followed by mouth, nose, or eyes.
How can everyone help prevent the spread of the virus?
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone maintain good hygiene, including washing hands frequently, drinking plenty of water, and covering with arms or paper towels when coughing; if you feel unwell, please do not go out at home. In addition, we recommend that you stay at home even if you are not sick; if you must go out, you should maintain a social distance (at least 6 feet away from others).
What are the symptoms of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) Like?
The CDC noted that the symptoms of the new coronavirus include "symptoms of fever and lower respiratory tract disease (such as coughing, difficulty breathing)." Avoid contact with people suspected of having a viral infection.
Can COVID-19 be cured?
There is currently no vaccine, and because this is a virus, antibiotics will not work. At present, there is no specific treatment plan, and medical staff usually treat symptomatically to relieve patients' discomfort.
Does CHLA screen patients and visitors?
In all contact with patients, our medical staff followed all the latest guidelines issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to try to avoid the spread of this new virus. All staff and visitors of the hospital will undergo oral screening to confirm the existence of symptoms of the disease. Anyone who fails the oral screening will be tested for viruses. In addition, all patients of CHLA will be tested for viruses during hospitalization. This includes testing patients who are about to undergo surgery.
What symptoms indicate medical attention?
If you or your child have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, see a doctor immediately. If you suspect that you are infected with COVID-19, please call your doctor or emergency department before seeing a doctor so that if you are infected with the virus, the hospital can help ensure that no one else is exposed to the virus.
